Ken Clarke
Ken Clarke was born in Southern California and grew up in the Rocky Mountains, where he developed a love for the great outdoors. Now he enjoys the desert environment of Tucson, where he has lived for the past eighteen years. Born into an artistic family--his father was a sculptor--he found his own passion for woodcarving twenty-five years ago.
Ken combines his love of wildlife and carving in his sculptures of birds. "I'm fond of all animals," he writes, "but birds make great subjects with their wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors." He carefully studies the physical traits of each species before beginning to carve, then shapes the body from a piece of basswood. He then adds glass eyes and metal legs, and recreates the colorful plumage in acrylic paint. The final piece is perched on driftwood and mounted on a walnut plaque. The result is an amazingly lifelike tribute to a beautiful creature.
