Now In: All Artists → Terpning, Howard
Howard Terpning® Howard Terpning® was born in Illinois in 1927. He served in the Marines during World War II before attending the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the American Academy of Fine Art. After an apprenticeship with the Swedish painter Haddon Sundblom, he began his successful twenty-five year career as a commercial illustrator, painting advertisements, magazine covers, and movie posters. During a brief vacation, he began painting the subject that interested him the most: western history. These paintings soon sold, and within two years Howard has ceased accepting commissions in order to focus solely on the works for which he would become famous.
Today Howard is one of the most famous painters of Native American history. “The American Indian fascinates me,” he says of his work; “there’s always another story about them waiting to be told. And I feel privileged to be one of their storytellers.” |
