Now In: All Artists → Auster, Ken
Ken Auster Ken Auster grew up surfing in California and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Long Beach State University. He got his start as a silk-screener, and built one of the world's most prominent silkscreen companies, creating now-legendary surfing art that adorned surfers from Hawaii to the shores of Peru. His surfing images, silk-screened as original prints on paper, became the "fine art" of this beach culture, and today, represent the classic surfer art of the past century. However, Auster's career took on new dimensions when he created two eight-foot landscapes of the Southern California coast. His style is now known as Contemporary California Impressionism. He is moved by the Laguna Beach area "because of the light, the way the sea affects the atmosphere, and the natural beauty of the beach and surrounding hills," says Ken, who works classic plein air magic in the studio. "I work only in oils and my paintings are very ‘juicy,’ very loose and very of-the-moment."
