Now In: Our Gallery Artists → Koch, Francois
François Koch François Koch was born and raised in South Africa, and studied commercial art at the Johannesburg School of Art. After a successful career in illustration, he devoted himself to fine art in 1970. His works include commissions for such prestigious patrons as the South African president and the country’s ambassadors. François first came to the United States in 1996, and today his work is featured in museums and galleries across the nation. He was recently voted Artist of the Year by the Friends of Western Art. François now spends part of each year in Tucson, traveling in and painting the southwestern desert. His images mix realism with romance to capture the special beauty of this unique part of the world. Describing his work, he says, "I was once asked, ‘why do you paint landscapes?’ I considered this question for the moment and realized we live in this beautiful, amazing world of God’s Creation for us to enjoy. Would it not be wonderful to capture some of this beauty on canvas?… What a challenge… And I am still trying!"
